Notes on copper, its discolouration and care

Copper vessels oxidise naturally, which leads to discolouration or dark spots. This oxidation process is unavoidable and does not affect the function of the copper. In particular, the inside of copper bottles or jugs, which often remains untreated, can develop dark spots over time. These can be easily cleaned with a mixture of citric acid and water. Cleaning every two weeks or when visible stains appear is sufficient, as copper has an antibacterial effect.

The outside of copper vessels is often lacquered to protect against oxidation. However, scratches can damage this coating, causing the copper to oxidise and darken at these points. To remove these stains, you can use lemon juice and salt. It is important to handle copper vessels with care, as they are not dishwasher-safe and the paint can come off due to friction or knocks. In general, copper care is easy as long as you clean the material regularly and handle it with care.
